The EU aims to reduce this figure to below 9% by 2030. What is "Early School Leaving" (ESL)? Early School Leaving means leaving formal education and training before finishing upper secondary education and not taking up further training later. It can limit young people’s job options, increase their risk of unemployment and social exclusion, and impact society as a whole.
